Received a note from our Chapter in Greensboro, NC. Newsletter Editor Trudy Atkins writes:

"Thanks also for the articles on kids dancing. I have faxed it to Amos Quick, who is director of Greensboro's thriving Boys and Girls Club and is also a member of our school board.

We are sponsoring a series of four lessons for Boys and Girls Club members beginning June 26 and we hope the interest will be sufficient to continue. As you probably know, these are kids from low income families, and many are destined to join gangs and get into trouble unless intervention occurs.

We believe ballroom dancing can be part of that intervention."

Chapters may contact Trudy at 336-299-0419 for more info.

SIX DANCE LESSONS IN SIX WEEKS May 17-June 11, at American Stage Theater, 211 3rd St South in St. Pete. Website: americanstage.org

This was a comedy set in St Pete, about a gay dance instructor and his conservative, Baptist, widowed student.

Two people marginalized by society (gay & older widow) who come together, face how opposite they are on the outside, gradually learn they have a lot in common, and they form their own family by the end.

The Florida performance had two local actors: Larry Buzeo and Hersha Parady Apparently, a problem was that the actor playing the dance instructor didn't dance, and only had a week and a half of dance lessons for the part. Hersha says she did have some dance background. Almost every scene began and ended with dance lesson dancing.

This was on broadway for a short time in 2003, with Mark Hamill and Polly Bergen.

It may be made into a film, shot in St. Pete area, this summer, starring Rupert Everett and Shirley Maclaine.

Below is an article on Adaptive Dance, which is also a new project for USA Dance. This is a very exciting expansion of ballroom dance!

Ballroom Dancers Show Off Their Talents.
St. Petersburg, Florida

In the past couple of years, ballroom dancing has made a comeback, with hit TV shows and movies like "Shall We Dance" and "Take the Lead." This weekend, you can see some world- class ballroom dancing in person.

The Millenium Dancesport Championships is being held at the Renaissance Vinoy Resort in St. Petersburg. Some of the best ballroom dancers from around the country are showing off their finest moves with dances like the cha-cha, the rumba and the tango.

But a competition like the Millenium Dancesport brings dancers from around the world. Piotr Ivanicki and Dorota Janowska are both from Warsaw, Poland. They've only been partners for five years, but they've already won two World Latin championships and one European. They've gained all this success despite the fact Piotr has never been able to dance on his feet.

Dorota Janowska, Wheelchair Dance Champion “People think there is a wheelchair person which is sitting and the able person is dancing. But when you look at it, it's a big difference.” Piotr has been in a wheelchair his entire life. He knows his type of dancing is different than most, but it's just as difficult and just as artistic.

Piotr Iwanicki, Wheelchair Dance Champion “I don't have any steps...I've got figures and I've got technique of riding the wheelchair. So I have to be a good driver of a wheelchair.” Just like able-bodied dancers, Dorota and Piotr must impress some tough judges.

Dorota Janowska “They are not only looking at Piotr, but they are looking at the couple. So I have to dance the best and he has to dance the best.” As partners and as champions, Piotr and Dorota have a simple message: Just because you can't walk doesn't mean you can't dance.

Piotr Iwanicki “When I'm on the dance floor, I don't feel like I'm in a wheelchair...and it's a pleasure for me if...someone will tell me, 'Oh I didn't see your wheelchair, I saw only your dancing." Piotr and Dorota will perform at the Millenium Dancesport Championships Friday and Saturday night. The championships are being held at the Renaissance Vinoy Resort in St. Petersburg. Tickets for the Friday night session are $50 For the Saturday day sessions, tickets are $15 And tickets for the final night performances on Saturday are $55.

The Homewood Senior Center and the Birmingham Ballroom Dance Association (Birmingham Chapter of USA Dance Inc.) staff and volunteers are busy planning this year's third annual DANCE MARATHON to be held September 15, 16 and 17. This event, celebrating National Ballroom Dance week, has become Alabama's most prestigious annual ballroom dance event. Again, there will be many simultaneous workshops for all levels of proficiency and covering many popular dance styles taught by professional instructors. We will also host three social dances with The Tradewinds and The Classics bands, and there will be exhibitions by professional and amateur dancers. And for the first time, there will also be an exciting and fun filled Jack & Jill competition.

As in previous years, the organizers hope to welcome dancers from across Alabama, as well as from Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee.

I would like to take a moment of personal privilege to thank our ever-faithful volunteers, Mike & Peg Johnston. Due to my busy schedule and other obstacles, I was unable to procure my necessary 25 signatures to run for election as Region VI RVP. (I was appointed in February of 2005, so this is my first election.)

Mike and Peg surprised me with more than my required signatures from dancers in the Southern Star Chapter in Tampa, FL. Not even my own Chapter!

God bless you, Mike & Peg! Now I'm legal!!!

Sincerely,
