The Shaun Pezant Jazz Band is a smooth jazz and swing group. The great vocalist, Elnora Spenser, belts out a song stronger than Ella Fitzgerald ever did, but she can bring it down to the soft, sultriness of a Lena Horne. You will hear tunes for jitterbug, lindy, west coast, rumba, cha cha, waltz, slow dance and mambo……and yes, some that old school, funky free style dancing. You can check PJB out on Thursday evenings between now and the dance at the Wynfrey Hotel. They have a standing Thursday gig for the folks at the Wynfrey from 7:30-10:30PM.

go 1 block; Friendship Hall will be on your right, parking on the left.

FREE Shim Sham Line Dance Class – Limited Time Only

Did you enjoy watching the Birmingham Swing Dancers do the Shim Sham Shimmy during the 2nd band break at the August 17 dance??  Wouldn’t you like to learn the dance and join the fun??  Rinsel & Pat will be teaching the Shim Sham Shimmy on Wednesday nights at 8:30-9:00PM at the Hoover Recreation Center (after the Foxtrot Class) Horizon Room, 600 Municipal Drive, Hoover.   They have agreed to do this half-hour class FREE for the next 6 weeks in order help this dance grow in the social dance community of Birmingham.  First class will be this Wednesday, August 22. Come on out and join us!!! Help us spread the Shim Sham!!! HEY, and Shim Sham DOES NOT REQUIRE A PARTNER!!!

Don’t Forget BSD Swing Class has a New Location & New Night!!!

BSD’s long-standing swing class changed nights and locations beginning Tuesday, August 14!!!  BSD moved swing class night from Mondays to Tuesdays effective with the August series, and changed teaching venues from Homewood Senior Center to Riverchase United Methodist Church. Riverchase UMC is located at 1953 Old Montgomery Hwy in Hoover. Our club’s primary instructors, Rinsel McIntosh and Pat Abbott were unable to continue to teach on Mondays due to significant changes in their respective work schedules.  

General Info on Swing Classes:

Beginning Swing Class is a six-week series that is repeated using a standard class syllabus each six weeks rotation. The syllabus is listed below. The Beginning Swing Class series forms the basis for becoming a good swing dancer. We encourage dancers to take the beginning class series as often as needed to master all the basics and polish their own unique style.

Intermediate Swing Class is a continuous class where 2-4 new moves (depending on difficulty) are taught each week. Rinsel and Pat consistently teach some 60 moves and variations over time in this class. It takes a dancer 20-22 weeks to be fully exposed to all the moves taught at the intermediate level. This is a continuous class since almost all the moves at the intermediate level are stand-alone moves. Dancers may drop in and out as their busy schedules allow. With the change in class nights and locations, Rinsel and Pat will start the new Intermediate class with the initial syllabus of moves listed below. BSD will be placing a complete 60 move syllabus of this class on the website in the next couple of weeks.

Classes will be held in the RUMC Fellowship Hall. This is a Kid-Friendly location!!!  

Beginning Swing Class: Beginning Swing; Tuesdays at 7PM; Riverchase UMC located at 1953 Old Montgomery Hwy, Hoover.  Cost is $5 per person per class.  This class series began Tuesday August 14.

Beginning Swing Class Syllabus: Basic Open, Basic Beginning, Throw-out & Return, Lady’s Pull-Across, Man’s Step Across, She Turns He Turns, Wrist Turn, Belt Turn, Trading Hooks, Trading Passes, Over-the-Head Back Pass, Trading Cuddles, Catch & Release, and Stop Turn.

Intermediate Swing Class: Intermediate Level Swing; Tuesdays at 8PM; Riverchase UMC located at1953 Old Montgomery Hwy, Hoover.  Cost is $5 per person per class.  This class began Tuesday August 14

Intermediate Swing Class Syllabus:  Basic Closed, Tuck Out, Elbow Tuck, Same Hand Tuck, Cross Hand Tuck, Double Tuck, Tuck with Free Spin, Cuddle, Cuddle YoYo, Sweetheart, Sweetheart with Free Spin, The Snake, Tap the Back, and Step Crosses.

Directions to Riverchase United Methodist Church: 1953 Old Highway 31, Hoover (Birmingham)

Church Information Office - 205 987-4030.

Take Highway 31 to Hoover.  If driving south on Highway 31, go past Riverchase Galleria and turn right at Riverchase Parkway.  If driving north on Highway 31, turn left at Riverchase Parkway.  About a half mile down this residential road you will come to a stop sign.  Go straight thru stop sign until you come to a red light.  Go right at red light onto Old Highway 31 (Old Montgomery Highway).  Baptist Church is on the corner as you turn onto this road.  Riverchase United Methodist is the next church on the right.  The first driveway is to the Office/Counseling center and Day School/Fellowship Hall.

Other Dance Lessons:

Last Foxtrot Lesson September 5 – Start ChaCha Lessons September 12:

Ballroom ChaCha Class:  After completing the Foxtrot Lesson series, Rinsel and Pat will teach ChaCha Lessons September 12 thru October 17 at the same location - Hoover Recreation Center, Horizon Room, 600 Municipal Drive, Hoover.  Class begins at 7:00 PM and cost $5 per person per class.  Come on out and continue building your dance moves.  See you there!!

Two-Step & Nightclub Lessons Continue:

Beginner/Intermediate Country Western Two-Step and Beginner/Intermediate Nightclub:  Effective Monday, August 06, 2007, Charlotte & Rusty Kesler will continue teaching Country Western Two-Step and Nightclub on Mondays at the Homewood Center, 816 Oak Grove Road, Homewood.  CW Two-Step class starts at 7 PM and Nightclub starts at 8 PM.  The cost of each class is $5 per person per class.  CW Two-Step is a lively and fun traveling dance done to CW music with a swing tempo; Nightclub Two-Step is a slower, very romantic dance to slow music of all kinds.  (Note: There will not be a class the 4th Monday of each month.)

**Special Zydeco Class September 15**

Advanced Style Zydeco Moves Pat Abbott and Carl Johnson will teach really cool Advanced Style Zydeco Moves on September 15 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon plus 30 minute practice afterwards at the Vestavia Hills Civic Center on Highway 31.  Cost is $15 …Just $3 More than a Dance.  Would be helpful if you have had Level III Zydeco …..  but come out even if you haven’t had it.  It’s all about the fun!!  No need to sign up ahead of time – just mark it on your calendar and show up!!

Annual Membership:

Annual membership dues are just $20. We welcome everyone and we make it easy to join our dance association.
