Ballroom Dancing Includes 18 Styles Of
Dances: Foxtrot, Waltz, Viennese Waltz (fast), East Coast Swing,
West Coast Swing, Jive, Hustle, Quickstep, Polka, Cha Cha, Tango, Rumba, Samba,
Mambo, Merengue, Bolero, Paso Doble. Many ballroom dancers learn eight to
ten of these well. Some know the basics of many of the others. Some
only learn a few such as East Coast Swing, Waltz, Chacha, Rumba, and still enjoy
the dances very much. Others do their own street styles of slow dancing
and jitterbug (ECS) and can hold their own and enjoy. Some dancers get
their start in swing dancing or Country-Western dancing or Cajun/Zydeco dancing
or line dancing or round dancing, and use what they have learned to become
ballroom dancers also. All dance styles use some steps invented by Greeks
and Romans as early as 750 BC and from many other countries and groups later.

DANCE LESSONS
Professional Ballroom Dance Studios: See Dancing
Instruction in the AT&T Yellow Pages. Some teach 55 minutes for an
hour. Some only 40, 45 or 50 minutes - giving students less for their
money. Some pressure you often to buy more lessons, and some before
you have used what you have bought, and to take their trips. Some do
not. Some assign an instructor without much experience. Some charge
more for private hours than other studios. Some combine group lessons with
private lessons in various packages so there are more group lessons than many
students can use, though paid for. Some do not offer packages of private
and group lessons - you can buy zero or one or several group lessons when you
take some private lessons. Some charge more for Silver and Gold lessons
than for Bronze. Some do not. Some call you every week to bring
guests to the weekly studio parties (Earn a free lesson if they sign up for
lessons). Some do not.
In my opinion, the best dance studio in Birmingham is
Dr. Dance studio 945-1266, because of their expertise,
talent and experience, because they do not pressure any student to buy even one
lesson and because they give so much back to the dance community. They are
the only dance studio that tells their students about the many dance clubs and
dances, and encourage their students to attend these dances. Their lessons
are $35 per 1/2 hour private lesson when buying more lessons at once, to $40
when buying one at a time. Group lessons are only $10 per hour, and
include beginner and intermediate lessons. There are only two instructors
- very advanced instructors: Kim Smith, Owner-Instructor. Steve
Hadley, Manager-Instructor. Introductory is $50, which includes three 1/2
hour private lessons, two one hour group lessons and a dance party.
Thursday night dance parties are free for students, as are group dances they
attend at places like JBY Ballroom Dance Club every month (admission paid by
students). No extra charge for a couple taking lessons together.
Murray
Private lessons from a Studio or from an individual Instructor
are the best way to learn and improve dancing, even if you only buy 6 or 8 half
hour or one hour lessons and supplement those with group lessons from a dance
studio, or from other Instructors listed below. Some instructors below
also teach private lessons. If you cannot afford private lessons, repeat
some of the group lessons listed below twice or three times.
The repetition will give your brain and feet a chance to
communicate - something they do not do too well the first month to three months
for most people (This same thing happens when learning tennis, golf, bowling,
skating). Those who are willing to look a little awkward, feel a little
awkward, turn the wrong direction will learn much quicker and realize this is
normal in all physical activities - including dancing.
Taking a half hour or one hour lesson from a studio once a week
or taking group classes a second time for each style of dance can make all the
difference. Get on the floor and learn line dances (lots of repetition in
most), dance the chair dances, ask others to dance - including better dancers,
can speed the learning and improvement and add to your enjoyment. Don't
worry about looking awkward or turning the wrong direction five times when
learning a new line dance. Everyone starts that way.
Every style of dancing you already know or learn will help you
with all other styles you choose to learn. Consider not limiting yourself
to one style of dancing. Learning two, or more styles offers meeting many
hundreds of dancers instead of one hundred, making more friends, having more
days in the week or month to go dancing, having more dances to go to when you go
to other cities or on cruises. Murray
