Ballroom Dancing Includes 17 Styles Of Dances: Foxtrot, Waltz, Viennese Waltz (fast), East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing, Jive, Hustle, Quickstep, Polka, Chacha, Tango, Rumba, Samba, Mambo, Merengue, Bolero, Paso Doble. Many ballroom dancers learn eight to ten of these well. Some know the basics of many of the others. Some only learn a few such as East Coast Swing, Waltz, Chacha, Rumba, and still enjoy the dances very much. Others do their own street styles of slow dancing and jitterbug (ECS) and can hold their own and enjoy. Some dancers get their start in swing dancing or Country-Western dancing or Cajun/Zydeco dancing or line dancing or round dancing, and use what they have learned to become ballroom dancers also. All dance styles use some steps invented by Greeks and Romans as early as 750 BC, and from many other countries and groups later.

Dressy Casual Dances thru October. For Men: Long or short sleeve shirt with collar. No jeans, shorts, hat or tennis shoes. For Women: Dress, pants and blouse, skirt and blouse. No jeans or shorts.

Professional Ballroom Dance Studios. See Dancing Instruction in the BellSouth Yellow Pages. Some teach 55 minutes for an hour; some only 40, 45 or 50 minutes. Some pressure you to buy more lessons and trips; some do not. Some assign an instructor without much experience. Some charge more for private hours than other studios. Some charge more for Silver and Gold lessons than for Bronze; some do not. Some call you every week to bring guests, some do not.

In my opinion, the best dance studio in Birmingham is Dr. Dance studio 945-1266. ($32.50 per 1/2 hour private lesson when buying more lessons at once, to $40 when buying one at a time). Directions from I-65: Turn onto I-59/I-20 going east toward airport. Get over into the right two lanes relatively soon. Pass 17th Street exit and take 22nd Street exit. Go south 11 blocks toward downtown to 1st Avenue North. Turn left on 1st Avenue North. Go 4 blocks and cross over Sloss Furnaces viaduct on 1st Avenue North. Turn left onto 34th Street at first light after the viaduct, and then turn right into Club entrance.

From south of Birmingham: Take Red Mountain Expressway into town. Take 1st Avenue North exit. Turn right, cross over Sloss Furnaces viaduct. Turn left onto 34th Street at first light after viaduct. Turn right, into Club entrance.

Park in Club's large parking lot, or on 34th Street by side of Club, or on street behind Club and storage facility. Guard patrols parking. Additional parking is in portion of Birmingham News warehouse lot across 1st Avenue North. Enter this lot from 1st Avenue North at the red light. From I-65, take exit 252 and turn onto Montgomery Highway (U.S. Highway 31 North) heading toward Birmingham and Vestavia Hills. Drive about 1 3/4 miles up the long hill. About 2/3 of the way up to top of hill, you will see a white building on left marked Vestavia Hills Civic Center. At Civic Center building, turn left at traffic light onto Merryvale Road.

Continue to 1st stop sign. Turn left. Lodge is first building on right. Turn right into Lodge parking lot. You can also park in Civic Center parking lot but not on street.

From I-65 South, take Alabaster-Saginaw Exit 238, go 100 feet straight to red light at Highway 31 and turn left. Go 2.1 miles, turn left onto Highway 26 East (to Columbiana) at red light. On I-20 going south (west) from Leeds, go past Exits 133 and 132A, take 1st Avenue South exit (Don't know number). Turn right. Go 2 1/2 blocks and turn right at 68th Street. Go 1 block. Building is on an 18 acre place cattycorner at 68th Street South & 2nd Avenue South. Turn left on 2nd Avenue, and almost immediately turn right into long driveway. Go to side entrance - at right side of building, by air conditioning units, for small ballroom at front of building.

On I-59/I-20 going north (east) from Tuscaloosa, or from I-65 (after getting onto I-59/I-20 going north) (east):

Go past exit 129 (Bham Airport exit). Stay in right lane. Take I-20 exit 130 to Atlanta. Go past the first 1st Avenue North exit 130A on right. Take the second 1st Avenue North exit 130B on right. Both exits are just 50' and 100' after you leave I-59. (Very quick.) You will come onto 1st Avenue North at about 64th Street. Stay on 1st Avenue North and go about 4 blocks to 68th Street. Turn right and go 3 short blocks.

On I-59 going south (west) from Gadsden or Trussville:

Take 81st Street exit 132 on right. Go 13 blocks to 68th Street and 1st Avenue North. Turn left and go 3 short blocks.

Building is on an 18 acre place cattycorner at 68th Street South & 2nd Avenue South. Turn left on 2nd Avenue, and almost immediately turn right into long driveway. Go to back entrance - at right side of building for Cloud Room. Go to side entrance - at right side of building, by air conditioning units, for small ballroom at front of building.

Another way is get on 1st Avenue North and drive to 68th Street. Turn right if coming from downtown (from west). Turn left if coming from Roebuck or Centerpoint (from east).

Take Highway 31 to Hoover. If driving south on Highway 31, go past Riverchase Galleria and turn right at Riverchase Parkway. If driving north on Highway 31, turn left at Riverchase Parkway. About a half mile down this residential road you will come to stop sign. Go straight thru stop sign until you come to red light. Go right at red light onto Old Highway 31 (Old Montgomery Highway). Baptist Church is on corner as you turn onto this road. Riverchase United Methodist is next church on right. First driveway is to Office/Counseling center and Day School/Fellowship Hall.

Go 1/4 mile to building just past the 2-story curved Rainbow City City Hall on left. At Rainbow City Community Center/Library, turn left just past building and park at back or front of building.
